A long time ago, and in a galaxy far away, I was a happy go lucky ass college student at Jackson State University...Jackson State, back then anyways, was called an HBCU...That stands for Historically Black College or University...Same school my own Mom went to when she got pregnant with me...In the deep south, going to an HBCU means many things...And sadly, education is probably at the bottom of the list...But who the fuck goes to college to learn..?

I'm not ashamed to admit that I didn't learn much of shit in my first two years of college, and the following two or 3 years after I left JSU was such a blur, I'm not sure how I could have learned anything at all...But anyway, damn, I'm getting ahead of myself...

Jackson State...

That was where I met my first love, got my first and last heartbreak, learned to skip class, met my two best friends in the whole fucking world, and come to think of it, I learned how to live...

We were in the worst possible living conditions ever...3 Deep to a little ass room, no seperated showers...We were robbed...Hmmm...No less than three times that year...Shit my homeboy from Iowa came down to school two weeks early, and had no lights or phone...Imagine that shit...And that is not even scraping the surface of the tragedy...

While Jackson State didn't have the finest of facilities...Or the greatest of academic pursuits available...What they DID have in abundance was WOMEN...I cannot even begin to talk about the number of times we would skip class on a sunny day just to see women walk through the yard...It was amazing...Creamy, honey dipped, chocolate, whatever you want Lil Dewey, JSU had that shit by the pound...You learn quickly to go hard, or go home...

But JSU, like most HBCU's do, has a "dancing band," the type of band that Nick Cannon and Jason Weaver made famous in the movie Drumline...That band was called "The Sonic Boom of the South" and they rocked shit like your constipated grandmomma...Every night, they would march through campus, practicing...Almost everyone would be outside, laughing, talking, enjoying the music...Lil Pimpin' over there in the cut gettin' his jook on...

And the jam at that time, even back then, was an old school cut called "The Show," by Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick...No matter where you heard that shit...Or where you was at...When the Boom played The Show, it was time to kick it...On the Plaza, third quarter at the football game (just to keep peeps from leaving after the halftime show), anywhere...We all know the routine...East side, west side, bankhead bounce that thang out, YA Know...The routine foo...

Anywhere from 500 to 50,000 people hearing the same song...Doing the same thing...Feeling the same groove...Laughing, smiling...And nobody cares that they are broke...Ain't nobody thinking about fighting...

Homeboy sister baby cousin tailgating, and you full off that good ass bar-b-que you got for free...You looking your best, fade blended nice as hell, got on that fly ass outfit you might take back to the mall the next day, but the colonge your lady loves so much is yours..

Its a little bit of that lean in your inside coat pocket, that Malibu, but you gone be alright...You're surrounded by fam, brothers on one side, your love on the other...And she looking good as hell too, you know its on that night...I didn't think too much of it then, but now that I look back, those were some of the best and most pivotal points in my existence...

I learned how to love my life at an HBCU because I could not love things that I did not or couldn't afford to have...I got my game tight at an HBCU, and talked some of the most beautiful creatures on the planet...And between Uunglor and Uatu, we could tell more than a few stories of adventure...
